So you’ve decided to tackle the challenge of creating your own character? Bravo! I think that this is one of the most fun parts of writing a story.
Your main character is very important because your readers will experience everything through the character. Are they a bold and brave hero? A scared but determined fighter? A regular kid who got dragged into a quest against their will?
These questions will help you get a feel for the kind of character you want to write about. It’s okay to borrow traits from people you know in real life, but try not to copy everything from one person. Your imagination is the most important part of any story!
1. What is your character’s name?
2. How old are they?
3. What do they look like?
4. What is their personality like?
5. What are they good at? (This can be anything from school subjects to making pancakes.)
6. What are they bad at? (This can be anything too!)
7. What are their hobbies?
8. What are they afraid of?
9. What do they do on a normal day? (Do they go to school or work? What do they do when they get home?)
10. What’s a weird fact about them?
The more you know about your character, the more your readers will be able to relate to them. Now that you have one character, try thinking about their family or friend group. Who else is part of your story?
